Eight innovative projects from across Queensland have collected 2019 Get Ready Queensland Resilient Australia Awards for making their communities better prepared for natural disasters and emergencies.

Now in their 20th year, the awards encourage grass-roots resilience building by celebrating innovative approaches to community safety and sharing them on a national platform.

Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the Queensland winners were standout projects in a highly competitive field with a record 34 entries across six categories.

“Queenslanders by nature are extremely resilient and the finalists at the 2019 Get Ready Queensland Resilient Australia Awards have highlighted the amazing work that is being done across the state,” Mr Dick said.

“I would like to congratulate all the applicants, finalists and winners for their work in the face of adversity to increase resilience to extreme weather in Queensland communities.

Every year, Australians face devastating losses caused by emergencies and disasters and in the last 12 months, we have experienced fires, cyclones, floods and droughts of significant scale and cost.

For Australian communities to thrive into the future, we need to better prepare, respond and recover from these events; the Resilient Australia Awards celebrate initiatives that build this resilience.
