Severe weather can disrupt a business at any time, often with little warning. Floods, storms, cyclones and bushfires can affect staff, customers, suppliers and your day-to-day operations.

The good news is a bit of preparation now can take a lot of pressure off later.

Here are three simple places to start:

✔️ Know your risks
Think about how severe weather could affect where you’re located, how you operate, and what you rely on to keep things running.

✔️ Make a plan
Write down what you’ll do, who’s responsible for what, and how you’ll keep in touch if things change.

✔️ Pack a kit
Keep the essentials ready, like key documents, basic first aid supplies and any equipment you might need in an emergency.

A few small steps now can make a big difference when it matters most.

Every business in Queensland has a different risk profile. A café in Brisbane isn’t going to face the same challenges as a rural supplier in North Queensland.

That’s why “know your risk” is the best first step.

Ask yourself:

🌧️🔥 Am I in a flood-prone area, or exposed to storms or bushfire risk?
🔌🚚 What happens if power, internet, transport routes or deliveries are disrupted?
🚗 Can my staff safely get to and from work during severe weather?
⏱️ How long could we keep operating if key systems or access were cut off?

Different industries will feel this differently. It might be stock, equipment, bookings, livestock, or essential services that are affected.

Thinking it through now means you’re not making decisions under pressure later.

A Business Continuity Plan (BCP) sounds formal, but really, it’s just a clear plan for “what we do if things go wrong.”

And it doesn’t need to be complicated.

A simple BCP should cover:

📌 Your key priorities and essential operations
👥 Who does what during an emergency
📢 How you’ll communicate with staff, customers and suppliers
🚪 How you’ll manage closures or reduced services
⚡ What you’ll do during disruptions like power outages or access issues

Having this written down helps everyone move faster and with less confusion when something does go wrong.

Start your plan using Queensland Government templates.

When severe weather is on the way, a few simple checks around your premises can make a real difference.

Things like:

🏠 Keep gutters, drains and roofs clear and well maintained
🪑 Secure outdoor furniture, signs and anything loose
📦 Move stock off the floor and protect important equipment
🚗 Relocate vehicles where you can
🌿 Trim vegetation around buildings
🐄 If you’re in a rural area, check fencing, machinery and livestock plans

Even small actions can help reduce damage and speed up recovery afterwards.

Looking after your premises also helps protect your people and your ability to keep operating.

Most businesses don’t really think about their data until something goes wrong.

A power outage, flood, system crash or even just a bad storm can be enough to knock things offline. And when that happens, it’s not just files you lose access to. It’s payments, bookings, customer details, and sometimes the ability to operate at all.

The tricky part is, it usually happens when you least expect it.

That’s why backups matter.

Here are a few simple things you can do now:

💾 Back up your data regularly
☁️ Use secure cloud storage or external drives
📄 Keep copies of important documents like insurance and contact lists
📁 Store printed backups somewhere safe and easy to access
👥 Make sure more than one person can access key information

Good backups mean you can keep things moving, even when systems don’t.

If you had to close suddenly or work without normal systems, a business emergency kit can save a lot of scrambling.

Keep it somewhere easy to grab and make sure more than one person knows where it is.

Include:

📄 Printed key documents (BCP, insurance, contacts)
🩹 First aid kit and basic protective equipment
🥫💧 At least three days of non-perishable food and drinking water
🔦📻 Torch with spare batteries and a battery-powered radio
🔋 Phone chargers or backup power options
🧰 Waterproof bags, plastic sheeting and tape

Check your kit twice a year so it stays up to date.

When something happens, clear communication makes a big difference.

Before an emergency, decide how you’ll keep in touch. This might be email, messaging apps, phone trees or social media.

During and after an event:

📢 Keep staff updated on what’s happening and what it means for work
🏪 Let customers know if you’re open, closed or operating differently
🚚 Keep suppliers informed about delays or changes
🌐 Use your website and social channels for timely updates
📝 Keep a record of key decisions and enquiries

Good communication helps reduce confusion and keeps trust strong when things are uncertain.
