Earthquake

DROP, COVER, HOLD.

Earthquakes in Queensland

We get hundreds of small earthquake tremors across the state every year, most too minor to feel. Bigger earthquakes are rare, but when they hit, they can damage buildings, roads and essential services, and can even trigger landslides or tsunamis.

Here's how to be ready either way.

Get ready before an earthquake

You can't predict an earthquake, so preparing ahead of time is what makes the difference.

  • Know how to turn off your electricity, gas and water, in case emergency services ask you to.

  • Secure tall or heavy furniture, like bookshelves and fridges, so they can't fall and block an exit.

  • Create a household emergency plan so everyone knows what to do and where to shelter.

  • Pack a kit. You'll want at least five days of supplies, more if you're at risk of isolation. Don't forget your pets.

DROP, COVER, HOLD.

If you feel shaking, remember these three words.

There's no warning with an earthquake, so this is the moment that matters most.

  • DROP to the ground.

  • COVER by getting under a sturdy table or piece of furniture.

  • HOLD on until the shaking stops.

After an earthquake

The danger doesn't always end when the shaking does.

  • If instructed by emergency services, turn off your electricity, gas and water.

  • Check for injuries and apply first aid if needed.

  • Inspect your home for structural damage and evacuate if it's unsafe.

  • Keep streets clear for emergency vehicles and don't enter damaged buildings.

  • Listen to trusted sources, like ABC radio, emergency services and official government channels, for updates.

Be alert for aftershocks, which can continue for days or weeks. Treat them like earthquakes: Drop, Cover, Hold.

Being aware of your risk and knowing what to do can make a real difference to keep you, your family and your property safe.
