Monday 5 to Sunday 11 October 2026
Queensland can experience cyclones, floods, bushfires and other severe weather. Get Ready Queensland Week is an opportunity to learn about the risks in your area and take steps to prepare.
From Monday 5 to Sunday 11 October, councils, schools and community groups will hold activities across Queensland to help people prepare for severe weather and disasters.
Use our Severe Weather Preparedness Checklist to help you get started.
What’s happening across the state?
Get Ready Queensland Week includes activities to help people learn about local hazards and how to prepare. Activities may include:
Community expos and preparedness stalls: Talk to emergency services, watch demonstrations and collect practical resources.
School workshops: Help children learn about severe weather and disaster preparedness through practical activities.
Emergency services displays: Meet local SES volunteers, fire crews and other emergency responders, and learn how they can help during a disaster.

Check with your local council to find activities happening in your area.
Why is it important to prepare?
Severe weather and disasters can affect homes, roads, power supplies and access to essential services. Taking steps to prepare before an event can help you and the people you care for manage these impacts.
There are practical things you can do now, including setting up weather alerts, checking your insurance and talking with your neighbours about how you can support each other.
You can also take steps to make sure your household is ready for an emergency.
Choose an action to get started:
Set up weather alerts through the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) or your local council.
Bookmark your local council’s disaster dashboard so you can find updates when you need them.
Check your insurance to make sure you have the right cover for your needs.
Talk to your neighbours about how you can support each other during an emergency.
Make sure you have enough medication and current prescriptions.
Include pets and other animals in your emergency plan.
Talk with your family and the people you care for about what you would do in an emergency.
Create an emergency contact list and include important contacts in your plan.
Check your gutters, roof and downpipes and clear away leaves and debris.
Check your emergency kit and make sure it includes enough food and water for at least five days.
Pack spare batteries, charged power banks and a battery-operated radio.
Keep important documents in a waterproof wallet or save digital copies somewhere secure.
How can you get involved?
There are several ways to take part in Get Ready Queensland Week:
Find a local event: Check your local council’s website or social media pages for activities near you.
Follow Get Ready Queensland: Visit us on Facebook and Instagram for preparedness tips and highlights throughout the week.
Complete the checklist: Use the Severe Weather Preparedness Checklist to identify steps you can take to prepare.
Get children involved: Ask children what they’ve learned through school activities and talk about how your household can prepare together.
