Severe storms are Queensland's most frequent natural hazard, and they can strike with little warning. They can bring large hail, damaging wind gusts, heavy rain that causes flash flooding, and even tornadoes.
Here's how to get ready for a severe storm.
When severe storms are predicted
When a storm is heading your way, there are some simple things you can do to prepare:
Secure anything that might fly away - things like outdoor furniture, rubbish bins, chemicals and poisons
Park vehicles under cover -away from trees, powerlines and creeks, and cover them with firmly tied-down blankets to reduce hail damage
Close things up – such as windows, shutters and curtains
Unplug electrical items – including aerials and computer equipment to avoid power surge damage
Check in – reach out to family, friends and neighbours, especially anyone who might need extra support
When a severe storm warning is issued
This is your cue to get everyone and everything inside immediately.
Move indoors, bringing children and pets with you, and have your emergency kit nearby
Stay away from windows, external doors and skylights
Keep listening to official warnings so you know how the storm is tracking
If you're driving, don't try to beat it home. Stop clear of trees, powerlines and creeks, and park in a sheltered carpark if you can
During a severe storm
Storms can pass quickly, but the danger doesn't always end when the rain does. The tips below will keep you safe during and after a storm:
Stay inside, away from windows and doors, until the storm has fully passed
If you lose power, note the time and check your home's safety switch to see if it's a wider outage
Be mindful when you go outside of downed powerlines
Never drive through floodwater. If it's flooded, forget it. Check the QldTraffic website before you drive
Monitor emergency alerts to stay informed until conditions clear
