Five actions — free, quick, and you can do them today.
Weather alerts can help you stay aware of severe weather where you live and where people you care for live. Download the BOM Weather app and turn on warning notifications for your chosen locations. Your council may also offer local alerts—find your council’s disaster dashboard to check.
Your council’s disaster dashboard brings together local information such as road closures, power outages and evacuation centres. Find your local dashboard, then save it to your browser favourites or phone’s home screen so it is easy to find when you need it.
A quick conversation now can make it easier to help each other when severe weather arrives. Swap contact details and discuss how you could check in on each other, particularly anyone who may need extra support.
Start with a couple of simple questions: “What would we do if the power went out" or "What would we do if we had to leave home?” Talk about where you would go, how you would stay in touch and who might need help with transport, communication or daily care. Explore planning for different support needs.
Start with copies of your ID, insurance policies and important household records. Keep paper copies in a waterproof wallet somewhere easy to reach, or store digital copies securely. Make sure you can access what you need if the internet is unavailable. See GRQ’s emergency kit guidance.
Next steps
A few more actions to work through before storm season.
Think about how you would transport your animals and where they could stay if you had to leave home. Check their identification details are current and pack food, water, medicines and familiar items. Different animals need different arrangements—find advice for pets and livestock.
Especially important for elderly, oxygen-dependent or medically vulnerable people.
Make sure your insurance suits your personal needs. If you rent, check your contents insurance. If you run a home-based business, check your business is covered.
Start by checking what you already have. Build up enough food and water for at least 3 days per person, and include items your household relies on. Check expiry dates and replace anything used. Keep supplies somewhere safe and easy to reach. See what to pack.
